“God himself will provide the lamb,” Abraham said.
— Genesis 22:8 (NIV)
A long time ago, there lived a man named Abraham who loved God very much. God had given Abraham a wonderful gift — a son named Isaac. Abraham loved Isaac more than anything in the whole world, and Isaac loved his father too.
Abraham had learned to trust God with all his heart. He believed that God was always good and always kind, and that God had a good plan, even when Abraham didn’t understand everything.
One day Abraham and Isaac went on a long walk together, up a tall mountain. Isaac carried the wood, and Abraham carried everything they needed. As they walked, Isaac asked, “Father, where is the lamb for our gift to God?” Abraham smiled and said, “God himself will provide the lamb.” Abraham trusted that God would take care of them.
When they reached the top of the mountain, God spoke. God had never wanted to hurt Isaac at all — not for one moment. God called out, “Abraham! Stop! Now I know that you love and trust Me.”
Then Abraham looked up and saw something wonderful. There, caught gently in a bush, was a ram — exactly what they needed. God had provided it, just like Abraham believed He would. Abraham and Isaac were so happy and so thankful.
Abraham gave that special place a special name. He called it “The Lord Will Provide.” And ever since that day, God’s people have remembered: we can trust God, because He gives us what we need, right when we need it. God always keeps His promises.
The Big Idea
Abraham trusted God, and God provided exactly what was needed. God never wanted to harm Isaac — He stopped Abraham and gave a ram instead. We can trust God too, because He loves us and He will provide.
Reflect & Discuss
- 1.What did Abraham say when Isaac asked where the lamb was?
- 2.What did God provide on the mountain?
- 3.What is something you can trust God to help you with?
A Prayer
Dear God, thank You that I can trust You, just like Abraham did. Thank You that You love me and that You always provide what I need. Help me to remember that You are good and that You keep Your promises. Amen.
