God's Promise to Abraham

God's Promise to Abraham

Genesis 12 · Genesis 15 · Genesis 17

“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you.”

Genesis 12:2 (NIV)

A long, long time ago, there lived a man named Abram. He had a house, and family, and friends in the place where he grew up. One day, God spoke to Abram and said something very big.

God said, “Leave your home and the people you know, and go to a brand-new land that I will show you.” God did not give Abram a map. He just asked Abram to trust Him and follow.

Then God made Abram a wonderful promise. “I will make you into a great big family,” God said. “I will bless you, and through you I will bless everyone in the whole world.” That was a very big promise!

So Abram packed up everything. He said goodbye to his old home, and he set off with his wife, Sarah, to follow God — even though he did not know where he was going. He just knew God would lead him.

One night, God took Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky. Try to count the stars!” There were too many to count! God said, “Your family will be as many as those stars.” But Abram and Sarah were very old, and they had no children yet. Still, Abram believed God.

God gave Abram a new name — Abraham — because he would be the father of a huge family. And God kept every promise. After a long wait, Abraham and Sarah had a baby boy, and God’s big promise came true.

The Big Idea

God asked Abraham to follow Him before Abraham could see where he was going — and Abraham trusted Him. We can trust God too, because He always keeps His promises, even when we have to wait.

Reflect & Discuss

  • 1.What did God ask Abram to do?
  • 2.How did God say Abraham’s family would be as many as the stars?
  • 3.What is something you can trust God with, even when you can’t see how it will work out?

A Prayer

Dear God, thank You for taking care of Abraham and keeping every promise You made to him. Help me to follow You and trust You, even when I can’t see what’s ahead. Thank You that You always keep Your promises to me too. Amen.
