God Honors Joseph the Slave
Joseph in Egypt
Genesis 39 · Genesis 40 · Genesis 41
“The Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in everything he did.”
— Genesis 39:3 (NIV)
Joseph was far away from home, in a land called Egypt. His brothers had been mean to him and sent him away. But Joseph still loved God, and God was always with him.
Joseph worked hard and was honest. He did what was right, even when no one was watching. Wherever Joseph went, he tried to do good — and God helped him.
For a while Joseph had to live in a prison, even though he had done nothing wrong. But Joseph did not stop trusting God. He was kind to the people there and helped them when they had worried dreams.
One night the king of Egypt had two big dreams that no one could understand. Someone remembered Joseph! God helped Joseph explain the dreams: soon there would be lots of food, and then there would be no food at all.
The king was so glad that he made Joseph a ruler over all of Egypt. Joseph wisely saved up food during the good years. So when the hungry years came, there was plenty of food, and Joseph saved many, many people.
Then one day, Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt looking for food — and Joseph saw them again! He did not stay angry. He hugged them and cried happy tears and said, “I forgive you. God turned it all into something good.” It was the happiest reunion of all.
The Big Idea
Joseph did what was right and trusted God, even when things were hard — and he chose to forgive. We can do what is right, trust God, and forgive others too.
Reflect & Discuss
- 1.How did Joseph treat people, even when life was unfair?
- 2.What did Joseph say to his brothers when he saw them again?
- 3.Who is someone you could choose to forgive?
A Prayer
Dear God, thank You for being with Joseph everywhere he went. Help me to do what is right, to trust You when things are hard, and to forgive others, just like Joseph did. Amen.
