“While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and ran to him.”
— Luke 15:20 (NIV)
Once there was a father who had two sons. He loved them both very, very much. They lived together on a big farm with sheep and goats and lots of good food.
One day the younger son said, “Father, I don’t want to wait. I want my part of the money now, so I can go far away and have fun.” It made the father sad, but he gave it to him.
So the son packed up and traveled to a faraway place. He spent all his money on parties and fun things, until one day — uh oh — every last coin was gone.
Now the son was hungry and lonely. The only job he could find was feeding pigs, and even the pigs’ food looked good to him! He sat down and thought, “At home, even the workers have plenty to eat. I will go back to my father.”
So he started the long walk home. But while he was still far, far away, his father saw him coming. The father ran down the road, threw his arms around him, and hugged him tight. “My son is home!” he said.
The father was so happy that he gave his son a beautiful robe and a ring, and he made a big party with music and dancing. “My boy was lost,” he said, “and now he’s found!”
The Big Idea
No matter how far we go, God loves us and waits for us. When we come back to Him, He runs to welcome us home with a big hug.
Reflect & Discuss
- 1.How do you think the son felt when his father ran to hug him?
- 2.Why was the father so happy his son came home?
- 3.Who runs to give you a big hug when you come home?
A Prayer
Dear God, thank You for loving me so much. Thank You that no matter what, I can always come back to You and You will be so happy to see me. Help me to stay close to You. Amen.
