Deborah and Jael

Deborah the Brave Leader

Judges 4 · Judges 5

“Go! This is the day the Lord has given you victory.”

Judges 4:14 (NIV)

Long ago, God’s people were sad and scared. A mean king and his strong army were being unkind to them, and they did not know what to do. So they prayed and asked God to help them.

God gave the people a wise and brave leader named Deborah. She loved God and listened carefully to Him. She would sit under a tall palm tree, and people came from all around so she could help them know what was right.

One day God gave Deborah a message. She called for a soldier named Barak and said, “God wants you to lead our people. Don’t be afraid! God will help us, and the enemy army will not win.”

Barak felt nervous. He said, “I will only go if you come with me.” So Deborah went too! She was brave, and she trusted that God would keep His promise.

When the day came, Deborah said, “Go now! This is the day God will give us the victory.” And just like God said, the enemy army was stopped. Their leader ran away, but he could not get away — God made sure the danger was over for good.

Then everyone was safe and happy again! Deborah even sang a glad song to thank God. She remembered that God is the One who really won, and the land had peace for a long, long time.

The Big Idea

God gave Deborah courage to lead, and He won the battle for His people. When we feel small or scared, we can be brave like Deborah because God is the One who helps us.

Reflect & Discuss

  • 1.Where did Deborah sit to help people, and who gave her the words to say?
  • 2.Why do you think Barak wanted Deborah to come with him?
  • 3.When you feel scared, what is one way you can be brave like Deborah?

A Prayer

Dear God, thank You for making Deborah brave and wise. When I feel scared or small, please give me courage too. Help me listen to You and trust that You are with me. Thank You that You are always the One who helps me. Amen.
