The Prince Becomes a Shepherd

Moses and the Burning Bush

Exodus 3 · Exodus 4

“Do not come any closer… Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”

Exodus 3:5 (NIV)

Moses used to live in a king’s palace, but now he lived far away in the desert. Every day he took care of the sheep, walking with them over the quiet hills.

One day Moses saw something amazing. A bush was on fire — but it did not burn up! The flames glowed warm and bright, and the leaves stayed green. “How can this be?” Moses wondered, and he walked closer to look.

Then a voice called out from the bush: “Moses! Moses!” It was God. “Take off your sandals,” God said gently. “The place where you are standing is holy ground.” So Moses slipped off his sandals, and he covered his face, because he knew God was near.

God said, “I have seen My people, and they are sad and hurting. I want you to go and help set them free.” But Moses felt small and afraid. “Who am I?” he asked. “How could I do something so big?”

Then God made Moses a wonderful promise: “I will be with you.” God would not send Moses all alone. God would go with him every single step.

So Moses said yes. He didn’t have to be the biggest or the bravest — he just had to trust the God who was with him. And that made all the difference.

The Big Idea

When God asks us to do something, we don’t have to be big or brave on our own. God promises, “I will be with you” — and He always keeps His promise.

Reflect & Discuss

  • 1.What was special about the bush Moses saw?
  • 2.Why did Moses take off his sandals?
  • 3.What promise did God make to Moses when he felt afraid?

A Prayer

Dear God, thank You for being so close and so kind. When I feel small or scared, help me remember that You say, “I will be with you.” Help me trust You and follow where You lead. Amen.
