The Plagues and the Passover

The First Passover

Exodus 7 · Exodus 11 · Exodus 12

“When I see the blood, I will pass over you.”

Exodus 12:13 (NIV)

Long ago, God’s people lived in a land called Egypt, but they were not free. They had to work very, very hard for the king, who was called Pharaoh. God’s people were sad, and they cried out to God for help.

God heard them. He loved His people, and He chose a man named Moses to help them. God told Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say: Let my people go!”

So Moses went to Pharaoh and said it, again and again: “Let my people go!” But Pharaoh said no. So God showed His great power with wonders all across Egypt, to teach Pharaoh that God is the one true God.

Then God gave His people a special plan to keep them safe. Each family cooked a good supper, and they painted some lamb’s blood around their door. That night they ate together, ready to go, knowing God was watching over them.

And God did watch over them. Every family with the blood on the door was kept safe and sound. God passed over their homes and protected the ones He loved.

When morning came, Pharaoh finally said yes — “Go!” And God’s people walked out of Egypt, free at last. They were so happy, because God had heard them, kept them safe, and set them free.

The Big Idea

God hears His people and loves them. He kept them safe and set them free. We can trust that God hears us and watches over us too.

Reflect & Discuss

  • 1.What did Moses keep saying to Pharaoh?
  • 2.How did God keep His people safe that special night?
  • 3.How does it feel to know that God hears you and watches over you?

A Prayer

Dear God, thank You for hearing Your people and keeping them safe. Thank You for loving me and watching over me too. Help me to trust You every day. Amen.
