“How can I understand,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?”
— Acts 8:31 (paraphrase)
Philip loved to tell people about Jesus. One day God’s angel said, “Philip, go to the desert road.” Philip didn’t ask why. He just went!
Soon a shiny chariot came rolling down the road. Inside sat an important man from a faraway country called Ethiopia, in Africa. He worked for the queen.
The man was reading God’s Word, but he looked puzzled. He just didn’t understand it. Then God’s Spirit whispered to Philip, “Go closer.” So Philip ran right up beside the chariot.
“Do you understand what you’re reading?” Philip asked. “How can I,” said the man, “unless someone helps me?” And he invited Philip to come sit with him.
Philip smiled and told him the good news — all about Jesus, who loves us and saves us. The man’s heart filled with joy!
Soon they passed some water. “Look, water!” the man said. “Can I be baptized?” So they stopped, and Philip baptized him. Then the man went home to Africa so happy, ready to tell everyone about Jesus.
The Big Idea
When God asks us to go and help, we can say yes — and we can help others learn how much Jesus loves them.
Reflect & Discuss
- 1.Why do you think the man was so happy at the end?
- 2.Who is someone you could tell about Jesus?
- 3.What helps you understand Bible stories?
A Prayer
Dear God, thank You for people who help me understand You. Help me to listen when You say “go,” and to share Your love with others. Amen.
