Made to Belong

He had everything that’s supposed to make you feel important — a top government job, in charge of the entire treasury of the queen of Ethiopia, riding in his own chariot. He’d just traveled hundreds of miles to worship God in Jerusalem.

But here’s what the story quietly tells us: as a foreigner — and as a eunuch — he was the kind of person the religious system kept at arm’s length. Close enough to worship, never quite “in.” Ever felt like that? Around the faith, around the group, but not totally sure you actually belong?

On the long road home he’s reading the prophet Isaiah — the part about someone who suffered silently, like a lamb. He doesn’t get it. He’s hungry to understand, but there’s no one to ask.

Meanwhile God taps a guy named Philip: leave the busy city, go to a desert road. No reason given. Philip goes. The Spirit says, “Go to that chariot.” Philip jogs up and asks, “Do you understand what you’re reading?” The man’s answer is refreshingly honest: “How can I, unless someone explains it?”

So Philip climbs in and shows him that the suffering servant in Isaiah is Jesus. Notice God didn’t shame his questions — He sent someone to answer them. Your questions about faith aren’t a problem to God; they’re an invitation.

They pass some water and the man asks the real question of his life: “Here’s water — what’s stopping me from being baptized?” In other words: is there any reason someone like me can’t be all the way in? The answer is nothing. He’s baptized and rides off “rejoicing” — and tradition says he carried the gospel home to Africa, long before it reached much of the world.
