Samson, God's Strong Man

Samson the Strong

Judges 13 · Judges 14 · Judges 15 · Judges 16

“The boy is to be set apart to God from his very birth.”

Judges 13:5 (NIV)

Long ago, before a baby named Samson was even born, God had a special plan for him. God sent an angel to tell his mom and dad, “Your boy will be set apart for Me. He will help save his people.” To show this promise, Samson would never cut his hair. His long hair was a sign that he belonged to God.

As Samson grew, God made him amazingly strong — stronger than anyone else! He could do things no one else could do. God gave him this strength to help the people of Israel, who were having a hard time because of their enemies.

But Samson didn’t always make good choices. Sometimes he liked to show off. Sometimes he forgot to ask God what was best. Little by little, Samson started to forget how special his promise to God really was.

One day, Samson told a secret he should have kept. He told that his strong strength was tied to his long hair and his promise to God. While he was sleeping, someone cut his hair — and his great strength was gone. Samson’s enemies captured him, and he was very sad.

But God is kind, and He never stops loving us. Slowly, slowly, Samson’s hair began to grow back. And Samson remembered God. From his heart he prayed, “Lord, please remember me. Give me strength one more time.”

God heard Samson’s prayer! God gave him his strength back, and Samson honored God one last time. Even after Samson had lost his way, God listened when Samson called on Him. God still wanted to use him — because God’s love never gives up.

The Big Idea

God gave Samson great strength, but Samson’s real strength was his promise to God. Even when Samson forgot, God still heard his prayer. God never stops loving us, and He listens whenever we call on Him.

Reflect & Discuss

  • 1.What was the special sign that Samson belonged to God?
  • 2.What happened when Samson forgot his promise to God?
  • 3.What did God do when Samson prayed and called on Him?

A Prayer

Dear God, thank You for making each of us special, just like Samson. Help me to remember my promises to You and to make good choices. And when I forget, thank You that I can always pray to You, because Your love never gives up on me. Amen.
