The Tower of Babel

The Tower of Babel

Genesis 11

“Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens.”

Genesis 11:4 (NIV)

A long time ago, after the big flood, all the people in the world spoke the very same words. They could understand each other perfectly, and they all moved together to a wide, flat land and decided to stay there.

The people had a big idea. “Let’s build a city,” they said, “and a tower so tall it reaches all the way up to the sky! Then everyone will look at us and say how amazing we are.” They wanted to make a great big name for themselves.

So they made hard bricks and stacked them higher and higher. The tower grew and grew. But the people had forgotten something important. God had told them to spread out and fill the whole world, and they were trying to stay in one place and show off instead.

God came down to see the tall tower. He knew their hearts were proud, and that this was not the good plan He had for them. So God did something surprising and clever to help them.

All at once, God mixed up their words! One person said, “Pass me a brick,” but it came out sounding strange, and nobody could understand anyone else anymore. There were suddenly lots of different languages! They couldn’t finish the tower, so they stopped building and spread out all over the earth, just like God wanted.

That place was called Babel, which means “all mixed up.” God turned the people’s proud plan into something good — He filled the whole world with people speaking many beautiful languages. And one day, people from every language will sing to God together!

The Big Idea

The people built a tower to show off and make themselves look great, but God’s plans are always better than ours. We don’t need to build big things to look important — we can follow God, who made us and loves us just as we are.

Reflect & Discuss

  • 1.Why did the people want to build such a tall tower?
  • 2.What did God do when their words got mixed up?
  • 3.What is something good God can do, even with our mix-ups?

A Prayer

Dear God, thank You for making so many people and so many languages all around the world. Help me not to show off to look important, but to follow Your good plans. I know You love me just the way I am. Amen.
