The Prince From the River

Baby Moses

Exodus 1 · Exodus 2

“She named him Moses, saying, ‘I drew him out of the water.’”

Exodus 2:10 (NIV)

Long ago in the land of Egypt, in Africa, a Hebrew mom had a brand-new baby boy. He had tiny fingers and a sweet little cry, and she loved him more than anything in the whole world.

But it was not a safe time for baby boys, so the mom made a clever plan. She took a basket and made it strong and dry so water couldn’t get in. Then she laid her baby softly inside, like a little bed.

Very gently, she set the basket among the tall green reeds at the edge of the Nile River. The baby’s big sister, Miriam, hid nearby to watch and make sure he was okay.

Soon a princess came down to the river — the daughter of the king of Egypt. She saw the basket floating in the reeds, and when she peeked inside, the baby was crying. “Oh!” she said. Her heart filled up with love for him.

Brave Miriam stepped out and asked, “Would you like someone to help take care of the baby?” “Yes, please,” said the kind princess. So Miriam ran and brought back their very own mom — and the baby’s real mom got to hold him and care for him again!

The princess named the baby Moses, and he grew up safe and loved. All along, even floating on the big river, God was watching over baby Moses. And God is always watching over you, too.

The Big Idea

Even when baby Moses was very small, God was watching over him the whole time. God loves you and watches over you, too — right from the very beginning.

Reflect & Discuss

  • 1.Where did the brave mom hide baby Moses to keep him safe?
  • 2.How do you think Miriam felt watching over her little brother?
  • 3.Who are the people God uses to watch over you and keep you safe?

A Prayer

Dear God, thank You for watching over baby Moses on the river, and for watching over me. Thank You for the people who love me and keep me safe. Help me know that You are always near. Amen.
